Microsoft Warns: Windows 11 Update Could Lead to Data Loss

Microsoft has announced that the new bug causing data loss appeared in Windows 11 build 26052. According to the release notes, attempting to restore Dev or Canary Channel builds results in user information being deleted. Microsoft said the restore process could damage drives designated as “Developer Driver Operating System” partitions and cause data to be deleted. Some users enrolled in the Insider program have confirmed that they are experiencing this error. Microsoft also reported that the Settings app crashed when clicking on the “Display Connection” options. Other reported bugs include a blue screen error in some games, playback issues in media apps, and restarting some programs.

For those who don’t know, the Insider program works similar to beta updates on Android/iOS. You can experience many of the features coming to Windows 11 in advance, but bugs may also be inevitable. If you are enrolled in the Dev or Canary Channel program, it is recommended not to restore builds 26052 or earlier. If you still wish to restore, it is advisable to back up your important files prior to the process.
