Putin specifically cited the Baltic states, alluding to their treatment of Russian-speaking minorities, deemed discriminatory by Moscow. He accused the Ukrainian government of glorifying Hitler’s accomplices, SS members, and employing terror against those opposing it, alleging that the elderly, women, and children are subjected to “barbaric shelling.”
The Russian president expressed concern about the promotion of Russophobia as state policy in several European countries, pledging to take comprehensive measures to eradicate Nazism. Putin predicted the downfall of modern-day proponents of Nazi ideology.
Highlighting the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Army breaking the Nazi Siege of Leningrad on January 27, Putin emphasized the enduring impact of Nazi Germany’s genocide on the Soviet population, recounting personal connections to the siege through his parents and the loss of his older brother to diphtheria during that time.
Former President Dmitry Medvedev, in his New Year’s address, declared the “ultimate defeat” of neo-Fascism as Russia’s primary goal in 2024, describing it as an ideology that adversaries are attempting to reignite. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova emphasized Moscow’s commitment to preventing the existence of an aggressive Nazi state on its borders and reiterated President Putin’s call for the “denazification” of Ukraine, originally proclaimed in February 2022.
