Senator Ben Cardin, Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, congratulated the Turkish Grand National Assembly and President Erdoğan on the ratification of Sweden’s accession protocol to NATO.

In his statement, Senator Cardin said:

“I commend Parliament for ratifying Sweden’s accession protocol to NATO and President Erdogan for signing it. This represents an important step forward in strengthening our Euro-Atlantic community and interoperability in the face of the Putin regime’s unprovoked and illegal aggression against Eastern Europe.”

“Turkey plays a critical role in the region as a NATO ally”

My approval of Turkey’s request to purchase F-16 fighters was conditional on Turkey’s approval of Sweden’s NATO membership. As a NATO ally, Turkey plays a critical role in the region. I look forward to starting this new chapter in our relationship with Turkey, expanding the NATO alliance and working with our global allies to counter Russian aggression.”
