Putin announced: Russia will suspend its participation in New START

Putin announced that Russia will suspend its participation in the New START treaty with the United States, which aims to curb intercontinental nuclear ballistic missile capabilities.

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke before the anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Stating that they will decide on the tasks of “Special Military Operation” step by step, Putin said that they are doing everything possible to solve the Donbas problem peacefully, but the West is preparing a different scenario.

Stating that Kiev held talks with the West on arms supplies before the military operation, the Russian leader said, “The more long-range weapons are shipped to Ukraine, the more we will remove the threat from our borders.”

Putin said that the West had “let the genie out of the bottle”, that its goal was unlimited power and that it wanted to globalise the regional conflict, adding, “It is impossible to defeat our country on the battlefield.”

The Russian President stated that the West is waging war on them on the economic front, but will not succeed, noting that the Russian economy is much stronger than the West thinks.

Putin said Russia would suspend its participation in the New START treaty with the United States, which aims to rein in intercontinental nuclear ballistic missile capabilities.

“I signed a decree last week on the combat readiness of new ground-based strategic missile systems,” the Russian leader said.

Thanks to the Russian people

“Most of our people supported what we are doing to defend Donbas. I want to thank the Russian people for their determination and courage.” “Our fighters are fighting for the future and to restore historical justice,” Vladimir Putin said.

Putin also said, “Our fighters are fighting for the future and to restore historical justice. I propose the establishment of a special fund to support veterans and fallen soldiers. Our task is to support the families who have lost their loved ones.”

What is the New START Treaty?

The New START Treaty, a continuation of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaties (START 1 and START 2) signed by the United States with the Soviet Union in 1991 and with the Russian Federation in 1993, is the last nuclear agreement in force between Washington and Moscow.

Signed in 2010, the New START Treaty limits the number of strategic nuclear warheads deployed by Russia and the United States to a maximum of 1550. It also limits the number of launchers and nuclear-capable heavy bombers to 800.

The 10-year treaty, which entered into force on 5 February 2011, was due to expire on 5 February 2021.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the decision to extend the agreement for 5 years on 29 January 2021. US President Joe Biden also conveyed his decision to extend the agreement on 5 February 2021.
