Emmanuel Macron, who took office as French President for a new term in a simple but symbolic ceremony at the Elysee Palace today, said, “We will make France more independent.”
France’s 5th President Before Macron in the Republican era, only former presidents François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac served two terms as president.
Constitutional Council President Laurent Fabius announced that Macron defeated far-right candidate Marine Le Pen with 58.55 percent of the support in the second round.

Referring to the war in Ukraine at the start of his speech in front of about 450 guests, Macron called for france to become more independent, saying, “I am aware of the seriousness of the return.”
Promising to lead the country with a ‘new approach’ by ‘planning, reforming and involving’ the French, Macron promised to leave young people with a more livable planet, a more vibrant and stronger France.
Macron’s new presidency will officially begin on May 14th. The appointment of the new prime minister will be made after that date. Legislative elections will be held a month later.
On Sunday, Macron will attend a ceremony commemorating the Allied victory over Nazi Germany on May 8, 1945.
