EU calls for reforms for Ukraine

The European Union said hundreds of billions of euros would be invested in rebuilding Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia, following the devastation caused by the war, but that it would have to “move forward with reforms” in the country.

EU calls for reforms for Ukraine

European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen answered questions at a joint press conference at the close of the Future of Europe Conference with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

Referring to Ukraine’s application for EU membership and this process, von der Leyen pointed to the importance of reforms in Ukraine.

Von der Leyen stressed that it is important for Ukraine to create a reconstruction fund due to the destruction caused by the war.

“There will be reconstruction investments in Ukraine. Not only the EU, but also international organizations and international partners have investments of hundreds of billions of euros. However, these investments should move forward with reforms. Reforms to get rid of oligarchs, end corruption and other issues, for example, are of utmost importance to Ukraine. There is a lot of momentum in Ukraine to move forward on this issue. The co-progress of investments and reforms could make a different progress towards the EU.”

Metsola, president of the European Parliament, said that the Ukrainian people want EU membership, and that the EU responded very quickly to this request.

“Seeing Ukraine in the heart of Europe is as important for our will and interests as it is for the wishes and interests of this country.”

Metsola said they also want to continue dialogue with countries in the Western Balkans, and welcomed moldova and Georgia’s applications for membership.

The EU Commission plans to present its view on the start of Ukraine’s EU accession process to EU leaders in June. EU leaders are expected to discuss this first opinion and recommendation at the summit meeting at the end of June.
