The radar-based system deployed in the north of the country is part of the Israeli Air Force’s overall attempt to improve the country’s air defenses, especially in the north, as the threat of Iranian drones and cruise missiles to the region increases, the Times of Israel reported.

The system, called the “Altitude Sensor” or “Sky Dew” in Israel, will be used to detect long-range missiles, cruise missiles and drones, officials said.

Israel has a number of radar systems to detect threats, but the new balloon aims to complement and improve existing capabilities by placing sensors at high altitudes.
