US “on hold” over attack on Iranian consulate in Damascus

Regarding the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said, "I'm not going to comment specifically on this attack because we need more information (from countries in the region) before we can reach a conclusion. As a general principle, of course we are concerned about rising tensions in the region."

At his daily press briefing, Miller commented on the alleged Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

Miller said that they had seen the attack but were still in talks with Israel and the relevant countries in the region, adding that they were trying to gather reliable information about the attack.

Miller, who neither confirmed nor denied that the attack was carried out by Israel, said that after meeting with the relevant parties, they would make an assessment of the perpetrator and what it could mean for the region.

“I will not comment specifically on this attack because we need more information to reach a conclusion. As a general principle, of course we are concerned about the escalation of tensions in the region. We are concerned about any action that could lead to the spread of conflict in the region.”

The Iranian government reported that Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahidi, one of the commanders of the Revolutionary Guards Army, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Iran’s consulate building in Damascus.

Iran’s ambassador to Damascus, Hossein Akberi, said that his country would respond “swiftly, directly and strongly” to the Israeli airstrike on Iran’s consulate building in Damascus.
