Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed today (Sunday) that some US citizens have been detained for violating Afghanistan’s laws.
Mujahid confirmed to Afghan television channel Tolo News that two US citizens were involved and that talks with US officials were taking place. Mujahid did not elaborate on the nature of the alleged violations or the identities of those detained.
Mujahid said that foreign nationals should abide by Afghan law when traveling to Afghanistan, adding, “If they violate the rules, of course they will face legal consequences.”
The exact number of foreigners detained in Afghanistan is unknown. An Austrian right-wing extremist was only released at the end of February after nine months in prison. The Taliban had arrested him on espionage charges.
In October 2023, the Taliban released four Britons detained for violating Afghan law. The UK apologized for the violations.
