The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, established by the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council, presented its first comprehensive report on the violations and crimes committed during the ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ protests following the death of Mahsa Amini after her arrest in September 2022.
The report to the UN Human Rights Council said that the violent suppression of peaceful protests, as well as widespread institutional discrimination against women and girls, has led to serious human rights violations by the Iranian regime, many of which amount to crimes against humanity.
The report also stated that violations and crimes against international law committed to suppress the protests included arbitrary deprivation of liberty, torture, rape, abduction, murder, gender-based persecution, unnecessary and disproportionate use of force.
