Peskov spoke to journalists about Navalny’s death in prison.

Answering a question about Navalny’s wife Yuliya Navalnaya blaming Putin for the death of her husband in the video released yesterday, Peskov said, “Of course, the accusations against the Russian President are unfounded and rude. These accusations are unconvincing, not substantiated.”

Commenting on the statement of the European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell that a transparent international investigation into Navalny’s death should be allowed, Peskov said, “We absolutely do not accept such demands, especially from Borrell.”

Navalny’s punishment and death

Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny was detained and arrested at the airport on his return to the capital Moscow on January 17, 2021, after receiving treatment in the German capital Berlin for alleged poisoning.

Upon the request of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN), the case against Navalny was concluded in the Moscow City Court on February 2, 2021; Navalny’s 3.5-year suspended prison sentence, which was given as a result of a corruption case in the past, was converted to a normal prison sentence on the grounds that he did not fulfill the judicial control conditions.

In August 2023, a Russian court sentenced Navalny to 19 years in prison for forming an extremist group.

Navalny was included on a list of people linked to terrorism and extremism in Russia in January last year.

On February 16, FSIN announced that prisoner Navalny had died in prison and that the cause of his death would be investigated.

In a video released yesterday, Navalny’s wife Yuliya Navalnaya blamed Russian President Putin for her husband’s death and said she would continue the work Navalny had started.
