Microsoft announced that it has blocked access to the artificial intelligence app ChatGPT for North Korean, Chinese, Russian and Iranian espionage groups that it found were using generative AI to plan cyberattacks.

In a statement on Microsoft’s website regarding cyberattacks from different nations using ChatGPT, which the company developed with its partner OpenAI, it was reported that “Sodium” and “Chromium”, cyber espionage groups associated with China, used artificial intelligence to strengthen the technical operations of major language models, gather information on Asian geopolitics, US internal affairs and other sensitive issues.

“Curium”, which is said to be working within the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, is said to be looking for clues via ChatGPT to fix software bugs, produce phishing emails and avoid detection in cyberattacks.

It was also stated that Russia’s “Strontium” cyber espionage group collects information on satellite and radar technologies, and that the North Korean cyber espionage group “Thallium” uses artificial intelligence services to produce content to be used in phishing campaigns and to research think tanks working on North Korea.

According to the statement, these cyber espionage groups were blocked from accessing ChatGPT.
