NATO membership meeting with Sweden and Finland to be held today

Turkey has given conditional approval to the start of the NATO membership process for Sweden and Finland and expects these two countries to fulfill their commitments. The third meeting of the Permanent Mechanism established to control the process will be held today. What is the latest situation in the membership process? Will Sweden and Finland’s membership processes be separated? The answer is in our news…

Sweden and Finland applied to become NATO members in May 2022. 28 of the 30 member states have approved the applications. Hungary is in the process of approval. Turkey is waiting for these two countries to fulfill their commitments.

Ankara Social Sciences University Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Muhittin Ataman said, “We agreed to hold these technical meetings in the sense of following up the realization of the promises made in the tripartite memorandum signed in June last year, and the steps to be taken by the Swedish State in the following process will be more related to the decisions to be made.”

The meeting was postponed indefinitely

The February meeting of the trilateral mechanism was postponed indefinitely following successive racist and anti-Islamic demonstrations in Sweden.

Ataman said, “It is necessary to say that some steps were taken in Sweden’s relations with Turkey as a requirement of that memorandum. The taking of those restorative steps brought about the return of negotiations to the new environment.”

Two countries’ membership processes can be evaluated separately

Experts also point out that the membership processes of the two countries may be evaluated separately in the future.

Prof. Dr. Muhiddin Ataman concluded his words as follows:

“Because of the danger of Finland being exposed to a possible invasion, they naturally agree to be handled as a single file. There is also another reason: the domestic political developments in Finland have accelerated this process.”
