First statement from Britain's King Charles III after cancer diagnosis

The King of England is known for his fight for nature conservation, organic farming and climate change

King Charles III has banned foie gras from being served at the royal family table, according to a letter sent by the British Royal Court to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

Charles is known for his long-running crusade to protect the environment, organic farming and the fight against climate change. He has also been one of the harshest critics of the consumption of fattened foie gras in the past.

In a letter to PETA, Sir Tony Johnstone-Burt, director of the Royal House, said, “Thank you for your statement on the ethical issues surrounding foie gras.”

In the letter, dated November 10, Johnstone-Burt said that the royal family does not buy fattened foie gras and that it is not served on the table, and that this policy is not expected to change, AFP reported, quoting Sharq al-Awsat.

Buckingham Palace did not respond to press requests for comment.

Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8, was a fan of foie gras. It was served to her at an official dinner in Paris in June 2014, when she met with former French President François Hollande.

As a token of appreciation, PETA sent King Charles a box containing the dish served at vegetarian chef Alexis Gauthier’s restaurant in London.

The organization said in a statement that it invites everyone to follow the king’s lead. It also noted that this step encourages the public not to eat foie gras during the upcoming Christmas and beyond.

This dish, which is especially popular at Christmas tables, can be imported and is currently sold in the UK. However, it is not produced in the country.
