Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of the Iranian revolution, said that the Tehran administration should listen to the demands of the people regarding the street demonstrations that have been going on in the country for about 2 months.
Speaking to Jamaran News Website, which is known to be close to the family of Ayatollah Khomeini, Khomeini evaluated the street demonstrations that started after the death of Mahsa Amini.
Khomeini said, “We must listen to the demands of the people. There is no other way out but democracy. In my opinion, the wisest way to govern a country is democracy where the majority has a say.”
Pointing out that for democracy to function properly, elections must be held freely, Khomeini said, “If someone does not give representation to those who represent a certain segment of society and does not allow elections to be held in a healthy way, they are forced to resort to irrational acts.”
Khomeini said that it would be less costly to base the country on the opinion of the majority, adding that dialogue is the way out of the social impasse.
Demonstrations started on September 16
The death on September 16 of 22-year-old Mahsa Emini, who collapsed and was hospitalized after being detained by Irshad patrols, known as “morality police” in Tehran on September 13, caused outrage in the country.
The demonstrations, which started after Emini’s funeral in her hometown of Saqqiz on September 17, spread to many cities of the country.
While no clear information was shared by the official authorities regarding the loss of life in the demonstrations, the Norway-based Iran Human Rights Organization (IHR) announced that the number of people who lost their lives as a result of the intervention of security forces in the demonstrations that started after Emini’s death exceeded 300.
It is stated that more than 30 security officers lost their lives in the protests.
