Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Monday called for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, given its repercussions on the world. He made the call during his opening speech at the 27th United Nations Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh.

In his speech at the opening of the session, Sisi pointed out that climate change is causing great loss of life and property and that climate problems are increasing day by day. The Egyptian President stressed the need for societies to become more knowledgeable about the magnitude of the challenges posed by climate change and to fulfill their commitments, stressing the need to end the suffering caused by climate change.

Sisi spoke about Egypt’s work to expand the green economy, while outlining national steps to address climate change. He also stressed the need to respond to the concerns of the African continent and to fulfill the commitments made by developed countries. “We are calling for the necessary financing to be provided to developing countries, which are suffering more than other countries due to the climate crisis, which is why we have chosen to call the summit the ‘Summit for Implementation’,” the President said.

The opening part of the conference includes three high-level round tables. The heads of state will speak about their countries’ efforts to combat the repercussions of climate change. Three more roundtables will be held tomorrow (Tuesday). Work on the COP27 conference began on Sunday in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. Delegates from more than 190 countries are attending the conference, as well as representatives of regional and international organizations concerned with environmental and climate issues.
