Buckingham Palace “blindsided” by Meghan Markle’s Vogue issue

According to a brand-new book on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle’s guest editorship of British Vogue in September 2019 came as a surprise to Buckingham Palace.

Interviews with royal insiders on the divide between the Sussexes and the rest of the royal family are included in Tom Bower’s book, Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors.

Although the Sussexes were not involved in the writing of the book, Bower asserts that she has lifted the curtain to show the creative process that went into creating Meghan’s “Forces for change” British Vogue issue.

He stated that Meghan “felt no reason to alert Palace authorities about her choice” to become the first guest editor of the venerable fashion magazine in an excerpt that was published in The Times.

Editor-in-chief Edward Enninful said that covert meetings, phone conversations, and emails were used to plan the special edition, which was kept a well guarded secret.

Sara Latham, a member of the Palace staff and at the time the Sussexes’ head of communications, was tasked with “masterminding [Meghan’s] current media launch.”

Meghan reportedly asked Latham to “demand that the official publication date in Britain be postponed by one day to permit publication in the US have the lead,” according to the book.

According to Bower, “Meghan’s directive showed that she was depending on her American advisors and hoped that a Palace request to Enninful would be complied with.

However, the request was denied. Additional requests “from Buckingham Palace” to “end the magazine’s promotion” were sent to the Vogue staff through Latham, but these were also turned down.

The special edition went on to become British Vogue’s fastest-selling issue in its history. It featured 15 women dubbed “game changers,” including Jane Fonda, Joni Mitchell, Laverne Cox, Gemma Chan, and Greta Thunberg.

Meghan “wanted to feature on the cover,” but the magazine’s editorial staff persuaded her not to because it would seem “boastful,” according to the extract.
