Meta and AMD are coming together for cheaper internet!

Facebook’s parent company Meta and AMD have announced that they are working together on a mobile internet infrastructure program designed to bring down the costs of mobile network base stations. Launched by Meta in the first quarter of 2020, the Evenstar program focuses on creating general-purpose radio access network (RAN) reference designs for both 4G and 5G networks in the Open RAN ecosystem.

While remote radio units (RRUs) were traditionally sold as a package, Meta and its partners in the program decided to separate the RRU hardware, distribution unit, and controller software so that mobile network operators could deploy solutions to enable internet access more flexibly.

AMD and Meta meet in the Evenstar program!

While AMD wasn’t initially part of the program, it began working with Meta by acquiring Xilinix, which closed in February. Together with Meta as part of its Evenstar program, the technology company will focus on cheaper and more accessible internet, as well as reducing costs on mobile networks.

Evenstar RUs with Xilinx Zynq RFSoC architecture provide the flexibility necessary to meet a wide range of requirements for the Evenstar program, including 4G/5G, mmWave, and under 6GHz, using the same underlying hardware. This makes it possible to leverage the platform to address a wide range of radio configurations and emerging standards so that radio suppliers can react quickly to new market opportunities.

With more devices being created to help build the infrastructure necessary for the Evenstar program, we can expect more from both Meta and AMD going forward. These two companies can provide people with cheaper internet by reducing base station costs.
