The trial of Donald Trump, the first former US President to be tried in a criminal case in US history, begins today in New York.
Trump is facing 34 separate charges in what is known as the “hush money case”.
Among the accusations is that he used the money he paid Stormy Daniels, an actress in adult films, as a business expense to cover up the money he paid her in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.
“POLITICAL WITCH HUNT”
Prosecutors see Trump’s payment of “hush money” as a violation of federal election law.
Trump, who denies the charges against him, calls the case a “political witch hunt”.
Trump’s request for an adjournment on the grounds that he is immune from criminal prosecution as a former President was also rejected by the court.
UP TO FOUR YEARS IN PRISON
It is stated that Donald Trump could face a prison sentence as a result of the trial. Trump, 77, could face up to four years in prison if found guilty.
Trump, a candidate for the US elections in November, could become a convicted criminal before the election because of this historic case.
