Finland indefinitely closes border crossing points with Russia

“The government has decided that the crossing points on the border with Russia will remain closed from April 15,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The ports of Haapasaari, Nuijamaa and Santio will also be closed to tourist boats indefinitely from April 15.

Finland, which closed its land borders with Russia late last year due to the increasing number of migrants coming from countries such as Syria and Somalia in recent years, aims to prevent the irregular flow of migrants to the country with these measures.

The statement emphasized that the continued flow of irregular migrants into Finland would pose a serious threat to Finland’s national security and public order.

After weeks of tension between the two countries over irregular migrants, which Helsinki described as Moscow’s “hybrid operation”, Finland announced on November 28, 2023 that it had temporarily closed its entire border with Russia.

Finland announced in February that the border closure would last until April 14.
