Egyptian Foreign Minister Samih Shukri: “The liquidation of the Palestinian cause is a violation of international law”

Egyptian Foreign Minister Samih Shukri said that he hoped that with the resumption of fruitful relations between Turkey and Egypt, they would be able to overcome the challenges in the region together. “We hope that we will find areas of cooperation and that the fruitful dialogue we can establish on our interests will be an opportunity to create better conditions,” he said.

Shoukry pointed out that one of the most important problems in Gaza is the issue of displacement of Palestinians “in violation of international law” and said, “The plans and efforts to send the residents to countries such as Egypt or Jordan in order to liquidate the Palestinian cause or to empty Palestinian lands are unacceptable and a violation of international law.”

Shukri said that they are working with Arab and Muslim countries, including Turkey, to end the tragic situation in Gaza and to achieve an immediate ceasefire, noting that they are also working to provide the necessary humanitarian aid to meet the needs of Palestinians in Gaza and to release prisoners.

“We will continue to do everything possible to end this devastating war, which is unprecedented in the 21st century and has claimed the lives of over 20,000 women and children, and to liberate our Palestinian brothers and sisters from it,” Shukri said, adding that they are in contact with many international partners, including the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

“Everyone believes that a ceasefire is necessary before Ramadan”

Stating that there is an international consensus that Israel should not engage in any military activity in Rafah, Shoukri said, “Any military attack in the area where about 1.4 million people are currently gathered will undoubtedly lead to a humanitarian situation and loss of life on a much larger scale than what we have seen so far.”

Shoukri said it is not appropriate to talk about a plan that would allow Israel to carry out military operations while ensuring the safety of civilians.

Minister Shoukri also commented on the need to halt military activity against Palestinians during Ramadan.

“I think everyone believes that it is necessary to reach a ceasefire before Ramadan for the security of the Palestinians and also because of its religious nature,” Shoukri said, adding that continued military activity during Ramadan would cause a tense environment not only for civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, but also in the Arab and Muslim world.

Shukri recalled that they had called for an immediate ceasefire and said, “We are working on this, we will continue to make every effort. We hope that there will be the necessary flexibility and understanding of the dangers and the need to end hostilities.”

Pointing to efforts to increase the volume of humanitarian aid and eliminate the threat of displacement, Shoukri said that the priority should be to save Palestinian lives.

“We will always encourage the parties to continue negotiations until we reach the goal of ending hostilities,” Shukri said, adding that negotiations are ongoing.

Minister Shoukry added that he thinks it is too early to speculate on what the situation will look like in the event of a permanent cessation of hostilities, “but it is certainly the responsibility of the Palestinian Authority to re-engage the people of Gaza as representatives and to establish the necessary services and governance issues for social normalization.”
