Rosatom: We will build the second nuclear power plant in Turkey

Alexei Lihachev, Director General of the Russian State Nuclear Power Corporation (Rosatom), announced that Ankara has decided to entrust the construction of the second nuclear power plant in Turkey to Rosatom.

Speaking at the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, Lihachev said, “President Erdogan (Recep Tayyip) made it clear that a political decision has been made to entrust us with the construction of the new power plant.” He underlined that very active negotiations are taking place with the Turkish side on the new nuclear power plant.

“President Erdogan made it clear that a political decision was made to entrust us with another site. Now we are working on the details. Most likely, the new construction site will be named Sinop.”

Noting that Moscow and Minsk are also examining the issue of possible construction of new nuclear generating capacities in Belarus, Lihachev said that the possibility of building a two-unit nuclear power plant in the south of the country is being considered and Rosatom is ready to participate in this project as well.

‘Physical protection of the Zaporizhye NPP, destroyed during the withdrawal of the Ukrainian army, has been restored’
Referring to the destroyed physical protection of the Zaporizhye Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), Lihachev said, “The physical protection of the plant, which was destroyed during the withdrawal of the Ukrainian army, has been restored.”

A special protective cover was created over the spent nuclear fuel storage facility, as shells hitting this site caused great concern.

He stressed that all technological processes at the Zaporizhye NPP are under the control of experienced specialists and there are no risks in this respect, but the threat of shelling from the Ukrainian side in the areas near the plant and the city of Energodar still remains.
