A freight train waiting at the railway station in Kathua to leave for Punjab started moving without an engineer, The Indian Express reported.
The train, which was taking a break in Kathua and the engineer got off without pulling the handbrake, could not be intervened as it gained speed in a short time.
The train, which traveled about 80 kilometers without an engineer, was slowed down and stopped by officials at Ucchi Bassi Station with wooden obstacles placed on the tracks.
An investigation into the incident has been launched.
