According to CNN, Greenfield said in a statement that the United States is working on a deal between Israel and Hamas that would lead to the release of hostages and at least a six-week pause in hostilities.

Stating that US President Joe Biden has had numerous phone calls with the leaders of Israel, Egypt and Qatar on this issue, Greenfield said: “However, the draft resolution submitted to the Security Council will not achieve these results and may even contradict them. The United States therefore does not support the adoption of this resolution. If the draft is put to a vote in its current form, it will not be adopted.”

Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Riyad Mansour, made a statement on February 14 on behalf of many countries, including Turkey and members of the Arab Group, and said, “We have clearly seen the overwhelming support for the draft resolution (calling for a ceasefire in Gaza) drafted by Algeria in the UNSC.”

The draft resolution is expected to be put to a vote at the UNSC on February 20.
