According to Yonhap, Ministry Spokesperson Lim Soo-suk made statements regarding Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikava Yoko’s reiteration of her country’s claim to the islets in her speech on this year’s foreign policy goals.

Lim “strongly” protested Japan’s renewed claim to the “disputed Dokdo/Takeshima islets” and said, “We call on Japan to immediately withdraw the statement.”

Contested islets

The region, which South Korea calls “Dokdo” and Japan calls “Takeshima”, has long been the subject of sovereignty disputes between the two countries.

South Korea has been deploying security personnel to the 0.2 square kilometers of territory under its control since 1954.
