YPG surprised by Pentagon's new Syria plan

The US Department of Defense is allegedly working on a new plan in Syria.

In an article by Amberin Zaman in Al-Monitor, the Pentagon plans to form an alliance between the Assad regime and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which includes the YPG, which Turkey considers a terrorist organization, as part of a revamped US policy in Syria.

Sources in the US administration emphasized that the SDF and the Damascus government were asked to come together against DAESH.

The sources, who did not elaborate on the plan presented by the Pentagon, pointed out that the aim is to protect the SDF in the medium and long term.

The meeting was allegedly organized on January 18 by the White House National Security Council at the request of the Pentagon.

Representatives from the Foreign Ministry, the CIA and other institutions also attended the meeting. It was stated that no decision was taken at the meeting, but the issue will be discussed at the next meeting, this time at the level of department heads and deputy ministers.

A source close to the matter pointed out that any decision could take months, but said that “anything is possible” if Donald Trump is elected president.

Sources in the US administration declined to answer questions about whether the meeting signaled the withdrawal of the 900 US troops stationed in northeastern Syria.

The Biden administration had previously emphasized that the withdrawal of troops from Syria was out of the question in the near future.

However, experts point out that rising tensions in the region following the Hamas attacks on October 7 may make the withdrawal of US troops inevitable.
