The award-winning Japanese author admitted that he wrote part of his novel with ChatGPT.
Rie Kudan said he wrote part of his novel The Tokyo Tower of Sympathy, which depicts a futuristic Tokyo, with the help of an AI-powered chatbot.
The book, which won the Akutagava Prize, one of Japan’s prestigious literary awards, was described as “flawless” by the jury.

n his speech at the awards ceremony on Wednesday, however, Kudan said he wrote about 5 percent of the book using “word-for-word” text produced by ChatGPT.
The 33-year-old author also said that he often uses the chatbot and sometimes tells ChatGPT thoughts he would never share with anyone else.
The use of ChatGPT in the novel, which tells the story of a futuristic Tokyo in which artificial intelligence plays a central role, has also created controversy on social media.
One Twitter user commented, “He wrote a book by skillfully using artificial intelligence. I don’t know if this is talent or not”, while another person argued that it was a good method for the author to use ChatGPT to reveal his creativity.
The Association for the Promotion of Japanese Literature, which organizes the prize named after the famous Japanese writer Ryunosuke Akutagava, declined a request for comment from the French news agency AFP.
