Since October 31, the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen have begun seizing commercial vessels they say are affiliated with Israeli companies off the coast of Yemen and attacking some of them with drones and missiles in response to Israel’s attacks in Gaza. US forces have announced that they have shot down missiles and kamikaze drones fired from Yemen on several occasions.
Following the Houthi actions, many shipping companies decided to suspend their services in the Red Sea.
US forms ‘naval task force’ against Houthis
On December 18, the United States announced the formation of a multinational “maritime task force” called “Operation Welfare Guardian” against Houthi forces, with the participation of a group of countries, on the grounds that the security of global maritime trade was endangered.

Foreign Minister Fidan discussed Yemen with his British counterpart: Tensions must be reduced
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had a telephone conversation with UK Foreign Minister David Cameron.
According to the information received from diplomatic sources, Minister Fidan pointed out that there are many conflicts in the nearby geography and drew attention to the need to reduce tensions in the Gulf of Aden. During the meeting, Fidan stated that Turkey is ready to fulfill its duty in this direction and the latest situation in Gaza was also discussed.
Minister Fidan emphasized that the war in Gaza and the violence against Palestinians must end as soon as possible and that the escalation of tension poses a serious risk to regional security and international stability.
