A representative of the Russian state defense industry company Rostec reported that Russia plans to start mass production of the new glider bomb Drel (drill) this year.
These bombs, one of Russia’s newest weapons, have the capacity to glide towards a more distant target, fly autonomously and deploy over the target at the ‘right time’, according to the TASS news agency, as quoted by Sharq al-Awsat.
“To date, the product has passed all kinds of tests. The first batch of the Drel aerial bomb is planned to be produced in 2024,” the unnamed representative said.

Drel is designed to destroy armored vehicles, radar stations, power plant control centers and anti-aircraft missile systems, the representative said.
Military analysts emphasize that it is also resistant to jammers and radar detection, making it difficult to destroy.
Western sources say Drel is a type of cluster bomb.
Banned by more than 100 countries, cluster munitions typically release a large number of small bomblets that can kill indiscriminately over a wide area. Those that do not explode can pose a danger for decades.
Ukraine, which received cluster munitions from the United States but promised to use them only to repel enemy troops, reported that Russia had already deployed its bombs in Ukraine, describing them as an ‘extremely grave threat’.
TASS reported that if the Drel bomb does not work on a specific target, it will self-destruct after a certain period of time and ‘will not pose a danger to the population after the end of the war’.
