A senatorial candidate was killed two days before the election in Nigeria

Two days before the general elections to be held on 25 February in Nigeria, a senatorial candidate was killed in Enugu East region of the country.

According to national media reports, Amechi Awkunanaw, the Senate candidate of the Labour Party (LP), was armed attacked on his return from the election campaign.

Gunmen killed the senatorial candidate and 5 people with him and burnt their bodies with their vehicles.

In a statement on the attack, Enugu state LP governorship candidate Chijioke Edeoga said, “Our party members are being targeted for assassination by political parties who see the rise of the Labour Party in the state as a threat and fear losing Saturday’s election.”

Terrorist organisations and armed gangs

Labour Party campaigns and political activities were attacked several times in the south of the country.

Nigeria, with a population of approximately 206 million, will hold presidential elections on 25 February and governor elections on 11 March.

Terrorist organisations Boko Haram and Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and armed gang members pose a security threat to the elections in the country.
