The phone call came a few weeks after Netanyahu’s victory in the Israeli elections

Likud Party leader Binyamin Netanyahu, who has been appointed to form the government in Israel, spoke to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the phone for the first time since 2013. Last week, President Erdogan said he believed that Netanyahu’s expected government would “continue cooperation between the countries”.

According to Haaretz, Erdogan said he ‘wants relations with Israel to continue based on mutual understanding, without any connection to the election results’. He added that Turkey is interested in maintaining relations with Israel on the basis of the common interests not only of Israel and Turkey but of the entire region.

According to Netanyahu’s office, during the meeting Netanyahu expressed his condolences over last week’s terror attack and offered Ankara’s help in the fight against terrorism. Erdoğan also expressed his condolences to Netanyahu over the killing of Israelis last week.
