The leader of the Camora Mafia was traveling to regime zones where he was producing and smuggling drugs.

The Interior Ministry of the Syrian Salvation Government, the civilian branch of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Idlib in northwestern Syria, announced that the ‘leader of the most dangerous Italian mafia’ was arrested while trying to cross from Turkey into Syrian regime areas. The ministry said the mafia leader was extradited to Rome a few months after his interrogation.

“Bruno Carboni (45 years old) was detained by border guards last March when he was trying to enter the liberated territories in northwestern Syria,” Mohammed Abdurrahman, the Interior Minister of the Salvation Government, which controls the administrative side in Idlib, said in an exclusive statement to Shark al-Awsat. Carboni had managed to escape several times and was moving between Arab and European countries under separate identities,” Abdurrahman said.

Abdurrahman pointed out that Carboni had recently arrived in Syria with the intention of residing in the Syrian regime’s areas, as it was seen as the best refuge for him away from the law. Syria is considered the right place to operate near the most important sources of the world’s drug industry.

Mohamed Abdurrahman said, “This time Carboni was caught with a fake identity, this time with a Mexican nationality. He cited fleeing his country as an excuse to avoid the heavy fine imposed on him for working with fake Rolex watches. In response, elements of the Ministry of Interior investigated the reality of the incident and an investigation was launched. It later turned out that his information was false, that he was an Italian involved in criminal activities at the international level, and that he was a wanted person by the European Union and sentenced to 20 years in prison. When the Ministry of Interior finished collecting the necessary data and information on his case, procedures began to hand him over to the government of his country with the facilitation of Turkey.”

The Interior Minister of the Syrian Salvation Government said that Bruno Carboni is “the leader of the Camorra Mafia, the most famous and dangerous mafia in Italy and European countries” and that he has been involved in criminal activities in Italy, including human and drug trafficking, murders and gang leadership. Mohamed Abdurrahman stated that he was duly handed over to his country via Turkey after the completion of the investigations and the identification of the evidence, and thanked Turkey for the facilities it provided.

On the other hand, the spokesperson of the ‘General Security’ unit in Idlib said, “Italian and United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities detained around 34 people involved in the same gang led by Bruno.”
