German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has condemned Russia’s recent armed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine, saying that Moscow will not allow its attacks to go unanswered.
Speaking in the Bundestag today, Scholz said: “The scorched earth strategy will not help Russia win the war. It only strengthens the unity and resolve of Ukraine and its partners.”
“Russia’s bomb and missile terrorism is ultimately an act of desperation, just like the mobilization of Russian men for war,” Scholz told MPs before the start of the European Union (EU) summit in Brussels.
Emphasizing that Ukraine will succeed in defending itself, Scholz said, “We will support it as long as necessary.”
“Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to sow fear, division and intimidation by openly irresponsibly threatening the world with nuclear weapons. He expects us to show weakness, but he is wrong, we are not weak.”
Emphasizing that Russian President Vladimir Putin is using energy and food as weapons, Scholz announced that Kiev’s financial needs will be met until the end of the year.
“We are working to sign contracts to guarantee gas supplies from more than one country,” Scholz said, adding that Germany is getting rid of its dependence on Russian gas and trying to lower energy prices.
