In Iran, where 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained on the grounds of ‘not obeying headscarf rules’, was tortured to death, the uprising is spreading in waves. While the protests, in which the police have killed nearly 80 demonstrators so far, continue in many cities, former President Rafsanjani’s daughter, women’s rights advocate Faize Hashemi was also detained.

According to Iran’s semi-official news agency Tesnim, Hashemi was detained by a security agency for ‘inciting demonstrators to street protests’.

SERVED IN THE ISLAMIC COUNCIL

Hashemi, who previously served as a Tehran deputy in the Islamic Shura Council, was briefly arrested for allegedly ‘acting against national security’ during the unrest following the disputed 2009 presidential elections.

After the death of Mahsa Emini on September 17, Faize Hashemi said in a speech on the social media platform ‘Clubhouse’ that “Iran’s treatment of prisoners is worse than Israel’s”.

Hashemi, who has been on the agenda with her harsh criticism and accusations against the country’s administration in recent years, said in a speech at a conference organized at the University of Zanjan in 2017, “I opposed the banning of the headscarf during the Shah’s reign, and I am also against making it compulsory now.”
