95-year-old Italian actress declares candidacy for Senate

Gina Lollobrigida, the spokesperson for a recently founded euroskeptic party, will run for the Senate.

Legendary Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida declared on Saturday that she will contest the general election in September as an independent under the banner of the recently established euroskeptic coalition ISP (Sovereign and Popular Italy). She will stand in as the Latina neighborhood’s representative.

ISP is supported by the Communist Party, Socialist Homeland, Civil Action, Ancora Italia, and Riconquistare Italy. The organization describes itself as “the sole alternative to liberal warmongering and healthcare tyranny.” In order to be admitted to the parliament, the organization must receive 3% of the vote. In its platform, the party criticizes the EU as “nothing more than a branch office on Wall Street,” and opposes greater military spending, economic globalization, widespread privatization, and “health tyranny.” It also asks for the return of monetary autonomy.

Although Lollobrigida’s former judge lawyer Antonio Ingroia introduced her to the newly established political party, this is not the 95-year-old celebrity’s first foray into politics. In 1999, she stood for the European Parliament on the Democratici ticket. She received 10,000 votes, however she was unsuccessful in winning.

In addition to “Beat the Devil,” “The Most Beautiful Woman in the World,” “Come September,” “Bread, Love and Dreams,” and “Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell,” Lollobrigida has appeared in a large number of movies. In the 1970s, she also worked as a photojournalist and had a much sought-after interview with Fidel Castro. She also trained as a skilled sculptor.

After Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced his resignation last month and President Sergio Mattarella dissolved the legislature after first accepting Draghi’s resignation, Italy planned emergency elections for September. Due to the increased cost of living during the economic downturn brought on by the Covid-19 containment measures and his support for arming Ukraine, which is extremely unpopular with Italians, the ex-former PM’s coalition partners in government withdrew their backing.
