The latest on the US midterm elections… The knot is untied in the Senate!

The US has been waiting for results from critical states for days. With the news from Nevada, which is critical for the control of the Senate, the knot in the Senate was untied. Democrats secured the majority in the Senate after the victory in Nevada.

In the midterm elections in the US, Democrats retained control of the Senate by winning the critical state of Nevada.

According to unofficial results in the state, Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto outpaced her Republican rival Adam Laxalt, who is supported by former President Donald Trump.

Thus, 50 of the 100 seats in the Senate went to Democrats and 49 to Republicans.

The last member of the Senate will be determined in the runoff expected to be held on December 6 in the state of Georgia. According to state law, candidates must receive at least 50 percent of the vote to be elected.

In the event that the Republicans win Georgia and the seats are split 50-50, the Democrats will retain their majority in the Senate, as Vice President Kamala Harris’ vote is decisive in the final vote.

The midterm elections held in the US on November 8 were the best performance of a party holding the presidency in the country in the midterm elections for the last 20 years.

US President Joe Biden stated that they were pleased with the results of the midterm elections and called on Republicans, “It’s time to decide who you are.”

Former Republican president Trump has made unsubstantiated allegations of election fraud in Nevada and Arizona.

In last Tuesday’s midterm elections, voters cast ballots for 35 members of the 100-member Senate and the entire 435-member House of Representatives.

Vote counting continues for the other wing of the US Congress, the House of Representatives. So far, Republicans have won 211 seats and Democrats 204 seats.

After the distribution of the last 20 seats, Republicans are expected to hold a slight majority in the House of Representatives.

Almost all opinion polls before the midterm elections predicted a “red wave”, referring to the color of the Republicans. According to the predictions, this wave would rise and sweep away the Biden administration. However, the results showed that the wave faded and the Democrats did unexpectedly well.

Anthony Zurcher, the BBC’s North America correspondent, says the results are “damaging” for former President Donald Trump, while they have allowed current President Biden to consolidate his support within his own party.

“The political landscape in the US looks completely different from the week before,” Zurcher says. Before the November 8 midterm elections, the Democrats had 48 seats in the Senate and the Republicans had 50, but 2 independent members also supported the Democrats in the votes.

The Democrats also had a majority in the Senate, with Vice President Kamala Harris’ vote decisive in the event of a tie.

In the House of Representatives, Democrats had 222 seats and Republicans 212. Don Young, one of the Republican members, died in March.
