Chinese warplanes and ships temporarily violate the Taiwanese border Beijing begins extraordinary live-fire military training exercises in the waters surrounding the island called the Strait.

In retaliation for Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei, China has fired missiles into the waters surrounding Taiwan while conducting extensive military exercises close to the island.

The Chinese military launched a total of 11 Dongfeng ballistic missiles into the waters close to Taiwan’s northern, southern, and eastern shores, according to Taiwan’s defense ministry on Thursday.

An internal Taiwan security assessment reviewed by Reuters claims that two further missiles were launched towards or around Taiwan’s Matsu Islands, which are located off the coast of China, at or about 2 p.m. local time (7 a.m. BST).

According to a Taiwanese source, some 10 Chinese naval ships temporarily breached the Taiwan Strait’s informal middle line before being “forced away” by Taiwanese navy vessels. Both sides’ military ships remained in the region and close by.

Taiwan had to scramble jets and use missile systems to chase down multiple Chinese air force aircraft that repeatedly momentarily crossed the middle line.

“They flew in and then flew out, again and again. They continue to harass us,” the source told Reuters.

State-run China Central Television (CCTV) stated that live-fire drills involving the navy, air force, and other military branches of China started at 12 p.m. local time (5 a.m. BST) and were held in six places around the island.

Long-range live-fire drills in the Taiwan Strait and missile tests off the island’s east coast, according to the statement, will be part of the action. On Sunday, the drills are scheduled to stop.

They are a replay of the most significant military exercises China conducted in 1995 and 1996 in an effort to intimidate Taiwan’s political elite and electorate.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) eastern command deputy chief of staff Gu Zhong said this week’s drills were “our severe warning to the ill-intentioned authorities and separatist elements pursuing Taiwan independence.”

Visits by foreign dignitaries are seen as acknowledgement of the sovereignty of the island by the Chinese government, which asserts that Taiwan is a part of its territory.

Chinese drills on the main international waterways and air corridors, according to Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, are “irresponsible, unlawful behavior.”
