Energy giant Shell has made the final investment decision for the construction of ‘Holland Hydrogen I’, Europe’s largest Green Hydrogen plant.
The plant is expected to be operational in 2025. Shell issued a press release on June 6, 2022, announcing that it will build Europe’s largest green hydrogen plant of 200 megawatts on its own land near Rotterdam.
The 20,000m² hydrogen plant will use 20MW (MegaWatt) electrochemical separators developed by German Thyssen Krupp.

The new plant will produce an estimated 60 tons of hydrogen per day using electricity generated by Shell’s offshore wind farm in the future (2023). Shell will also supply the Green Hydrogen from the yet-to-be-built plant via the 40 km HyTransPort pipeline to the Shell Energy and Chemical Park in Rotterdam (in Pernis), taking into account two important sectors: transportation and the chemical industry.
The Rotterdam plant will produce enough hydrogen for 2,300 trucks per day. As the network of hydrogen filling stations for heavy transport grows, the supply of Green Hydrogen is expected to help decarbonize road transport.
Marjan van Loon, Shell Netherlands, said: “With a capacity of 200 megawatts, Shell is finally launching green hydrogen production in our country. Today will go down in the records as the day we launched the Green Hydrogen Economy in the Netherlands together with our 150 partners.”
