Google will pay 90 million dollars to developers
Following Apple’s announcement of the start of the third-party payment era in the App Store in South Korea, Google made a similar announcement. The company said it had agreed to pay a total of $90 million to small US app developers in a class action lawsuit alleging that its Play Store policies violated federal antitrust laws.
As mentioned above, Google takes a 30 percent commission on all purchases made from the Play Store. However, according to developers, this rate is quite high and ties their hands. Although the company reduced the commission rate to 15 percent for the first $ 1 million in annual revenue from the Google Play Store by US developers in 2021, it could not get the desired efficiency on the subject.
In order to resolve the class action lawsuit, Google announced a $90 million funding pool for developers who earned less than $2 million in annual revenue from the Play Store between 2016 and 2021. Accordingly, the company will pay a minimum of 250 thousand dollars and a maximum of 200 thousand dollars to US developers who meet the requirement.
Although Google has found a compromise with the plaintiffs, it has not yet received the court’s approval. However, a positive decision is expected soon.
