In the Netherlands, the coronavirus Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5 are spreading rapidly. The number of Covid cases linked to these variants has doubled in 1 week.

Experts say this development could be the start of a new summer wave related to the coronavirus.

According to positive test result figures obtained by the Amsterdam University School of Medicine and the Amsterdam Community Health Centre (GGD), the BA.4 and BA.5 variants accounted for 27 percent of corona infections 1 week ago, but now this figure has doubled.

About 54 percent of the cases that emerged this week are now the BA.4 and BA.5 variants.

According to public broadcaster NOS, Dutch sewage water measurements also show that the number of coronavirus particles is increasing.
