UNICEF official Omar Abdi told a briefing to the UN Security Council that the war in Ukraine has created a children’s rights crisis.

Noting the attacks on schools and the deprivation of their children’s right to education, Abdi said that about 100 children have died in Ukraine in the last month.

Abdi said the schools were being used for military purposes and that 15 UNICEF-backed schools were damaged in the war last week, and called for an end to attacks on schools.

US Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Richard Mills said Russia has targeted an average of 22 schools every day since the war began on February 24.

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzia rejected the accusations against the Russian military, arguing that children in Ukraine are not taught history correctly.

Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, accused Russia of kidnapping Ukrainian children and giving them illegal adoption.
