Italian Prime Minister Meloni announces his candidacy for EP elections

Meloni, who attended the congress of the far-right party Brothers of Italy (FdI) in the city of Pescara, made statements about the EP elections to be held on June 6-9, which will shape the future of European politics.

Meloni said: “I have decided that if I survive, I will take to the field to head the Brothers of Italy lists in all the constituencies. Just write my name on the ballot paper. I am proud that citizens call me Giorgia, I have often been mocked for my roots, but I am proud to be a man of the people.”

Meloni, who heads the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group in European politics, stated that they want to send the left to the opposition within the European Union (EU) as they did in Italy.

Meloni urged the parties to preserve their identity within the EU.

Prime Minister Meloni also noted that he would not leave government work for a minute to campaign on his own behalf in the EP elections.

Like Meloni, Antonio Tajani, leader of the ruling Forza Italia (FI) and Foreign Minister, and Elly Schlein, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party (PD), announced last week that they would run in the EP elections.

According to media reports and comments, these leaders are running in the elections in order to increase the strength of their parties, and if elected, they are expected to be replaced by the candidate with the next highest number of votes.

The EP elections are an important test for the right-wing coalition government led by Meloni, which has been in power in Italy for 18 months.

In the survey conducted by SWG, one of the public opinion research companies in the country, between April 15-21, Meloni’s party FdI ranked first with 26.8 percent of the vote, the PD led by Elly Schlein ranked second with 20 percent, the other opposition party 5 Star Movement (M5S) ranked third with 15.9 percent, the far-right League, one of the ruling partners, ranked fourth with 8.5 percent and Forza Italia ranked fifth with 8.4 percent.
