According to CNN, the New York Police Department (NYPD) intervened against the students after they announced that they would detain anyone who refused to end the protest.
Police detained more than 100 students who refused to disperse as they gathered to protest the genocide in Gaza and the continued financial investment in companies that profit from the occupation of Palestine.
University Rector Minouche Shafik stated that the action “posed a threat” to the functioning of the university and said, “We request the NYPD’s help to remove these people.”
Social media footage also showed police officers arriving at the campus upon the rector’s request, preventing the sit-in and threatening to detain those who opposed it.
