The US vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for Palestine’s full membership of the UN.

Ad-hoc member Algeria submitted a draft resolution to the Security Council asking it to “recommend to the UN General Assembly, after examining Palestine’s application for admission as a full member, the admission of the State of Palestine as a full member.

The UN Security Council meeting on the admission of new members considered the UN Secretary-General’s letter dated April 3, 2024 addressed to the President of the Security Council.

In its petition to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Palestinian Authority had requested that its previous request for full membership, made on September 23, 2011, be reconsidered in April.

“I have the honor to request that the Security Council reconsider this application, which was submitted at the direction of the Palestinian leadership, in April,” Guterres said in a statement referring the Palestinian application to the Security Council.
