EU High Representative Borrell: We are not and will not be at war

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Borrell gave an interview to the Spanish press and spoke about the situation in Ukraine and Gaza.

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell analyzed the conflict in Ukraine and underlined that the world is a violent world, recalling that the peace that prevails in Europe is ‘an exception’.
In an interview with the Spanish press, Borrell was frank about the European Union’s role in the conflict in Ukraine, stating that they are ‘not at war and will not be at war’ and that they are determined to ‘increase their defense capacities’.
Borrell made the following statements in his statement:

There is a war in Eastern Europe that shows no sign of ending. We Europeans must realize that our peace is an exception. The world is a violent world. If we were at war, we would be talking about the Third World War.

Borrell said that contributing troops to the conflict in Ukraine is not the same as the EU’s training of “more than 40,000 Ukrainian soldiers” in the last year, which the EU has been doing since the beginning of the conflict.

Borrell also said that Zelensky asked him, “I know that young Spaniards will not come to die for Kiev, but will you give us the weapons we need to defend ourselves?” and that his answer to Zelensky was and will continue to be ‘yes’.

‘The siege against civilians in Gaza cannot be justified’

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Borrell has strongly criticized Israel’s treatment of civilians in Gaza, saying that the siege of civilians cannot be justified.

Borrell said that since the beginning of Israel’s military intervention in Gaza, Israel has said that cutting off supplies, water and measurements is a violation of international law.

“The siege of civilians in Gaza cannot be justified by Israel’s right to self-defense. The Hamas terrorist attacks that killed 1,400 people and started it all are absolutely condemnable.”

Borrell praises Turkish elections, calls on Ankara

EU High Representative Borrell also made a statement on the local elections held in Turkey on March 31st.
Emphasizing that they welcome the local elections in Turkey, European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, in a message shared on the social media platform X, called on Ankara to implement reforms in order to get closer to the EU.

Noting that Turkey is honored that the local elections were held in a calm and professional atmosphere, Borrell said: “The elections demonstrate the commitment of its citizens to democracy at the local level. Fundamental rights and democracy are at the heart of our relations and we hope to work together on reforms that will bring Turkey closer to the EU.”
