A Grand Farewell to a Life-Size Gundam Robot in Japan [Video]

The 1979 animated replica of the robot from the animated Gundam anime has been given a grand farewell.
One of the biggest stars of the 1979 anime Mobile Suit Gundam was undoubtedly the RX-78-2-Gundam robot. For the 40th anniversary of the series, Bandai, the producer of the anime, had an 18-meter tall, movable replica of the iconic robot built. It’s time to say goodbye to the robot that has been waiting for visitors in Tokyo since December 2020.

A grand farewell from Bandai

A little more than 3 years after its unveiling, the robot was unveiled in a very grand ceremony. The giant robot, which has a total of 36 moving parts, can kneel, walk, stretch its hand, turn its head and speak, welcomed more than 2 million visitors during the exhibition period, a significant part of which coincided with the pandemic. Under normal circumstances, the robot’s exhibition period would have ended in 2022.

At the ceremony where the robot was bid farewell, in addition to the fireworks, a drone show was also held. In the drone show, iconic moments of the series were also projected into the sky. These moments included the Last Shooting scene where the original Gundam was destroyed and moments featuring other characters from the series. Gundam series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino also gave a short speech at the event.

Although the Yokohama Gundam is no longer on display, there are still giant moving statues from the series around Japan. The Gundam series continues with new productions.
