The US Supreme Court has temporarily halted a Texas law authorizing police to detain migrants who enter the country illegally across the Mexican border.

According to The Washington Post, US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito issued a stay on the law until March 13.

In his ruling, Alito stated that the Texas state authorities have until the end of the day on Monday, March 11, to present their arguments to the court.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott approved the law in December 2023.

The law, which also empowers local judges to order the removal of illegal immigrants, was scheduled to take effect today.

Disagreement between the Biden administration and Texas Governor Abbott

Texas Governor Abbott accused the administration of US President Joe Biden of not taking adequate measures on border security and ordered the construction of barbed wire about 4 kilometers long to the border area in Eagle Pass, which is mostly preferred by irregular migrants to cross to the US.

The Biden administration had also applied to the US Supreme Court to remove the barbed wire, stating that border security is under the authority of the federal government.

The Supreme Court ordered the removal of barbed wire along the Rio Grande River on the Mexican border, but the dispute with the Biden administration escalated after Texas Governor Abbott announced that he would not comply with this decision.

On January 23rd, despite the court order, the Texas National Guard refused to allow the US border patrol to do its job and continued to deploy barbed wire, and the governors of 25 Republican states issued a joint statement saying they stood with Texas.
