According to national media, a woman whose job application to the City of Brussels in January 2021 was rejected because of her headscarf filed a lawsuit claiming discrimination.
In December 2022, the Brussels Court of First Instance ruled in favor of the municipality.
The claimant then took the matter to the Brussels Employment Court in January 2023.
However, the court ruled that she had not been discriminated against, citing a ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU).
On November 28, 2023, the Court of Justice of the EU ruled that public authorities in member states can ban employees from wearing objects symbolizing religious beliefs at work.
