According to The New York Times, firefighters responded to a house in Sterling, Virginia, where they responded to a natural gas leak at around 7:40 p.m. local time.
Laura Rinehart, spokeswoman for the Loudoun County Fire Department, said crews have detected the leak and are seeking support from hazardous materials experts.
Deputy Fire Chief James Williams explained that the explosion occurred while firefighters were inside the house.
Health officials announced that 1 firefighter was killed and 13 people, including 11 firefighters, were injured in the explosion.
It was shared that the investigation into the cause of the gas leak is ongoing.
