In a statement released by the German Interior Ministry, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser informed the European Union (EU) Commission that border controls on land borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland will be extended.
Border controls were extended until June 15 with the aim of combating human trafficking crimes and limiting irregular migration, the statement said, pointing out that controls were also carried out on the German-Austrian border and these controls will continue until May 11.
Minister Faeser, who was quoted in the statement, stated that with the extension of these controls, the Federal Police will be able to take all fixed and mobile measures at the borders according to the current situation, which is important to prevent human trafficking and limit irregular migration.
Faeser shared the information that around 560 human traffickers have been detained since mid-October and emphasized that this shows that the measures are effective.
According to the ministry’s data, about 23,000 irregular migrants have been detected and 13,000 people have been prevented from entering the country since October 16, when controls began at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.
